Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political patronage refers to the distribution of resources, benefits, or favors by politicians to their supporters in exchange for political loyalty. In Nigeria, this system often influences decisions regarding resource allocation, including the distribution of government contracts, jobs, and infrastructure projects. In Dutse Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, political patronage plays a central role in how public resources are distributed. This study examines the impact of political patronage on resource allocation in Dutse LGA, particularly focusing on whether patronage-based distribution of resources promotes or hinders effective governance and development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While political patronage can serve as a tool for consolidating political power and gaining voter loyalty, it may also lead to inefficiencies in governance, with resources being allocated based on political loyalty rather than merit or need. This study will investigate the consequences of political patronage on resource allocation, assessing whether it undermines the equitable distribution of resources in Dutse LGA.
